Mridhula Bharathwaj is an undergraduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who is the heart and soul behind Project Stop The Splash. With an unwavering commitment to advance women's rights on a global scale, she has transformed her passion into a formidable force, inspiring change and fostering hope within global communities. Growing up in the United States as an individual of Indian origin, she acknowledged the oppression and even brutal treatment of women through gender-based violence forms such as rape and acid attacks in addition to other instances such as harassment, discrimination, and societal stigma. This exposure to such injustices ignited her passion to make a difference globally in terms of women's rights.
Although Mridhula is passionate about addressing all forms of global gender-based violence and discrimination, she established this initiative with a focus on acid attacks as it is a global and common menace to society that often goes unnoticed. She sought to create a sense of awareness among global communities, provide medical and legal resources for victims, eradicate the stigma around recovery and rehabilitation, and advocate to governments for stricter laws pertaining to the issue. Mridhula hopes to expand the scope of this initiative through her strategic vision, compassionate leadership, and strong partnerships with governments, NGOs, and other institutions.
Throughout Mridhula's journey of activism, she has developed her sense of initiative, drive, and leadership which has led her to serve as a role model for her community in various ways. Her contributions to her community through this initiative was recognized with a Citation from Governor Wes Moore of Maryland, recognition from prominent figures such as President Joe Biden, Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, Senator Chris Van Holden (D-MD), Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), and even global government members in the Government of Tamil Nadu, India.
At the core of Mridhula's philosophy is that belief that even a small ripple of passion can cause an impactful wave. This guiding principle drive's Mridhula's actions that transcends borders. As Project Stop The Splash continues to grow, Mridhula remains committed to achieving her goal of eradicating acid attacks and will continue her fight against this demonic menace. She envisions a future with reduced attack rates, adequate resources for legal and medical support, and to create a sustainable and equitable society for all.
